Saturday Posts . . .

I have another quote to share this week.  It’s been all over the place – the earliest reference I can find to it is in the 1932 movie “The Mummy” – and it was used again in the updated remake with Tom Cruise last year.  In the latter movie, it was attributed as being an Egyptian Prayer of Resurrection, but I can’t find independent confirmation of that.

“Death is but the doorway to new life.  We live today, we shall live again.  In many forms we shall return.”

Saturday Posts . . .

Today, I want to share a quote I got from a video game character, which I think needs to be impressed on every person who is intolerant of beliefs that conflict with their own.

“Faith is of the heart, not the head.  When the heart is ungoverned by reason, charlatans have powerful tools to deceive.”  —  Sister Justinia, a non-player character in the video game Dragon Age: Origins.

The prime definition of faith is that it is a belief in something that can’t be proved – so it isn’t a fact.  Nobody’s opinion (or faith) is better than anyone else’s, no matter why you choose to place your faith in it.  And the beliefs of any religion should never guide governments in passing laws that put other faiths outside of the law.

FEAR definition . . .

Anyone who’s known me for very long, or been reading my blogs for very long, knows that I’m all about looking for ways to make better sense out of the world around us.  I pay particular attention to areas where ordinary life and spiritual growth have the potential to intersect and cooperate.  In that train of thought, I’d like to offer you a quote that was brought to my attention.  It is attributed to a character played by Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2014 movie “Nightcrawlers” (which I have not seen, and do not endorse for only that reason).

“You know what FEAR means?  False Evidence Appearing Real.”

The real reason you have a SSN# . . .

You know that, in certain situations, I hate to be right. Particularly when it looks like we’re getting the worst possible deal. Well, I got this in today’s Offshore Destiny newsletter. In it is a quote . . . oh, well, I’ll let you read it for yourself, and make up your own minds. Bear in mind, it happened in 2001.

Thought provoking quote . . .

My wife found this in an email she got yesterday, and passed it on to me. I just had to share it!

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.” – – Herman Goering (at the Nuremberg trials)

Sad but true . . . .

My wife sent me the following in an email this morning:

The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments in a Courthouse – You cannot post “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” “Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery” and “Thou Shall Not Lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians!

It creates a hostile work environment.
